Munich, Germany

Our flights to Munich were mostly uneventful.  Weather almost did not allow us to land in Atlanta, which would have thrown off our plans, but all was well in the end.  Thank-goodness we had a long enough layover in Atlanta.

Once we arrived in Munich we took a train to the train station where we stored our luggage and got tickets on the Hop-on Hop-off bus.  Our first stop was the Alte Pinakothek (the art museum).  It had some amazing works and a good audio guide so we learned some things.

Our next stop was Odeonsplatz, one of many plazas in the city.  We saw a 19th century concert hall and our first of many churches.

Our next stop was the Residenz, a former royal residence now open to the public.  It was quite ornate although much was destroyed in WWII, they have slowly been restoring it.

We then chose to ride the bus and listen to the commentary of other highlights of the city.  We got off at Marienplatz, which is a plaza that has access to many famous sites.  We visited Hofbauhaus, a famous beer garden that has traditional German music and food.  It was super crowded, so we just walked through and left to find food in another venue.  After dinner we went back to the Residenz where we were able to listen to a chamber concert in the Court Chapel.  It was amazing.  Two gentle men played the harpsichord and violin.  One of the highlights of the entire trip!

After the concert we took our time walking back to the train station.  We saw Neau Rathaus, New Town Hall with its famous carillon.

We then spent an hour eating and trying to relax our tired bodies before we boarded our overnight train to Budapest.  I had a good night's sleep.  Kyle said the beds were a little hard.😄

Overall a great first day of our vacation.
